Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim β In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Welcome. Whether you took your Shahada yesterday or are simply exploring what Islam means for your life, this guide is for you. It is not a test. It is a hand extended in brotherhood and sisterhood β a reminder that you do not need to know everything at once, and that sincerity matters infinitely more than perfection.
The Shahada β What You Have Declared
If you have said "Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul-ullah" β "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" β then you have entered Islam.
This simple declaration contains the whole of Islamic theology. The first part (la ilaha ill-Allah) is the negation and affirmation: you reject all false objects of worship and affirm the one God. The second part connects you to a living tradition of revelation, prophecy and practice that spans 1,400 years.
You Start Fresh
The Prophet Muhammad ο·Ί said: "Islam wipes out whatever came before it." (Sahih Muslim)
This is one of the most merciful teachings in any faith: your past, whatever it contains, is behind you. You begin your Islamic life with a completely clean slate. This is not a formality β it is a theological reality in Islam.
The Five Pillars β Your Framework
Islam rests on five foundational practices. These are not arbitrary rules β they are a structure designed to keep you connected to Allah throughout each day and each year.
- Shahada β the declaration of faith (you have already done this).
- Salah β the five daily prayers: Fajr (before sunrise), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (after sunset) and Isha (night). These are the heartbeat of Islamic life.
- Zakat β obligatory charity of 2.5% of savings held for a full lunar year, given to those in need.
- Sawm β fasting from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan.
- Hajj β pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in a lifetime, for those physically and financially able.
Learning to Pray β Your First Priority
Salah is performed five times daily. Each prayer consists of units called rak'ahs, involving standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting β all while reciting specific phrases and Qur'anic verses.
Start by memorising Surah Al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter of the Qur'an), recited in every prayer unit. Use our Learn Salah step-by-step guide to walk through each movement and phrase with audio at your own pace.
Before each prayer, you perform Wudu β a ritual washing of hands, mouth, nose, face, arms, head, ears and feet β which takes about two minutes once you know the steps.
Reading the Qur'an
The Qur'an is the word of Allah, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ο·Ί over 23 years. Begin with a reliable English translation β the Saheeh International translation is clear and accurate. You do not need to read Arabic immediately; understanding the meaning comes first.
Many new Muslims find it helpful to start with:
- Surah Al-Fatiha (Chapter 1) β the essential opening prayer
- Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) β just four verses that summarise Islamic theology
- Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas (Chapters 113β114) β short chapters of seeking protection

Finding Community
The Prophet ο·Ί said: "The believer to the believer is like a building, each part strengthening the other." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Finding a local mosque and introducing yourself is one of the most valuable steps you can take. Most mosques warmly welcome new Muslims β many have dedicated new Muslim programmes, classes and support networks. If you are not ready to attend in person, online Islamic communities offer a gentle starting point.
Common Questions
My family are not Muslim β is that okay?
Yes. Islam honours family bonds. The Qur'an instructs believers to maintain good relations with non-Muslim family members. Show your family Islam through your character.
I don't know any Arabic β do I have to learn it?
Arabic is the language of the Qur'an and Salah. Learning it is deeply rewarding, but it is not a condition for being Muslim. You will pick up the key phrases of prayer naturally as you practise.
I keep making mistakes β will I ever get it right?
Yes. The Prophet ο·Ί said: "All of the children of Adam make mistakes, and the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent." (Tirmidhi). Islam is not about achieving perfection β it is about continuously returning to Allah.
What about my previous beliefs or lifestyle?
As mentioned above, the Prophet ο·Ί confirmed that embracing Islam wipes out what came before. Move forward with sincerity, and trust in Allah's mercy.
