What to Do After Shahada
Congratulations — and welcome to Islam. The days after your Shahada can feel exciting, overwhelming, or both. Here is a practical guide to your most important first steps.
1. Perform Ghusl (Ritual Bath)
Most scholars recommend performing a full ritual bath (ghusl) after taking the Shahada. This is a cleansing of both body and spirit as you begin your new life. The intention (niyyah) is made in your heart, then you wash the entire body completely, beginning with a general rinse and paying attention to all areas.
2. Learn Wudu and Salah — As a Priority
Salah (the five daily prayers) is obligatory from the moment you become Muslim. It is the most important obligation after the Shahada. Focus on learning it as soon as possible — it does not need to be perfect from day one, but you should begin as soon as you can. See Lessons 7 and 8.
3. Visit Your Local Mosque
Introduce yourself. Tell them you are a new Muslim. Most mosques have dedicated new Muslim support, classes, and communities. They may provide you with:
- A Shahada certificate
- A copy of the Qur'an with translation
- Links to classes and study circles
- A mentor or buddy
4. Start Avoiding the Major Prohibitions
You don't need to fix everything immediately, but begin with the clear obligations:
- Avoid pork and pork products
- Avoid alcohol and all intoxicants
- Avoid sexual relations outside of marriage
- Begin praying as soon as you are able to learn the basics
5. About Changing Your Name
You are not required to change your name. If your name has a negative meaning in Arabic (such as "worshipper of [false deity]"), scholars recommend changing it — but most non-Muslim names are entirely fine to keep. Many prominent Companions kept their pre-Islamic names.
6. About Circumcision (for Men)
Male circumcision is a Sunnah (prophetic practice) and considered by most scholars to be strongly recommended (sunnah mu'akkadah). It is not fard (obligatory), and there is no set deadline for an adult convert. Consult a doctor and take your time.
7. Be Patient with Yourself
You will not learn everything in a week. Islam was revealed over 23 years for a reason. Focus on the most essential obligations first, and let knowledge grow gradually. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Take on only as many acts of worship as you can bear."
