What to Learn First
New Muslims are often overwhelmed with the amount there is to learn. The good news: Islam has a natural order of priority. Focus on what is obligatory first, then build from there.
Priority 1 — The Foundation of Belief
Before anything else, your belief must be sound. Make sure you understand:
- Tawheed — the Oneness of Allah (Lessons 1 and 2)
- The Shahada and what it demands
- Belief in the Six Articles of Faith
Priority 2 — Salah (The Daily Prayer)
This is your most urgent practical obligation. Learn in this order:
- Surah Al-Fatiha (7 verses — the opening chapter, recited in every rak'ah)
- Wudu (ritual purification)
- The basic movements and words of salah
- Prayer times (use a prayer app like Muslim Pro or Athan)
Don't wait until your prayer is perfect before you begin. Pray as best you can and improve over time.
Priority 3 — Basic Halal and Haram
- Avoid pork and alcohol immediately
- Understand halal meat vs. non-halal (see Lesson 13)
- Avoid obvious prohibitions: lying, cheating, fornication, backbiting
Priority 4 — The Qur'an
- Begin with a good translation in your language (Saheeh International is recommended)
- Start with short surahs: Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar
- Memorise gradually — one surah at a time
- If possible, find a Quran teacher to learn proper recitation (Tajweed)
Priority 5 — Zakat and Fasting
Zakat becomes obligatory once you have wealth above the nisab threshold for one lunar year. Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory — see Lesson 14 when your first Ramadan approaches.
Priority 6 — Building Knowledge
Once the basics are in place, continue learning:
- The life of the Prophet ﷺ (Seerah)
- Islamic manners and character (Akhlaq)
- More detailed fiqh (jurisprudence)
- Attend classes at your local mosque
A Word of Caution
Be wary of learning religion exclusively from social media or anonymous online sources. Ground yourself in verified scholars from established institutions. If something seems extreme or unlike what you would expect from a merciful, just God — seek a second opinion from a qualified scholar.
