Your First Visit to a Mosque
Walking into a mosque for the first time can feel overwhelming. Here is everything you need to know so you can walk in with confidence.
What to Wear
- Men: Dress modestly — trousers and a shirt are perfectly fine. Shorts above the knee are not appropriate in the prayer hall.
- Women: Cover the hair (a scarf), wear loose clothing covering the arms and legs. You can bring a scarf with you if needed — mosques sometimes have spares at the entrance.
- Clean clothes are important — you will be in a place of worship.
Removing Your Shoes
You must remove your shoes before entering the prayer area. There is usually a rack or area near the entrance. Place your shoes there — leaving your right shoe over your left is Sunnah.
Layout of the Mosque
- Prayer hall (musalla) — the main carpeted area where you pray, facing the qiblah (direction of Mecca)
- Mihrab — a niche in the wall indicating the qiblah direction
- Minbar — the pulpit from which the khutbah (sermon) is delivered
- Wudu area — for ritual purification before prayer
- Separate areas for men and women — most mosques have a designated sisters' area
Upon Entering
It is Sunnah to enter with the right foot and say: Bismillah, Allahumma salli ala Muhammad. Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik. (In the name of Allah, send blessings on Muhammad. O Allah, open the gates of your mercy for me.)
If it is not a prohibited prayer time (sunrise, sunset, high noon), pray two rak'at of Tahiyyat al-Masjid — the greeting of the mosque. This is a recommended Sunnah.
At the Friday Prayer (Jumu'ah)
- Jumu'ah is held around the time of Dhuhr on Fridays
- The imam delivers two khutbahs (sermons) — listen in silence
- Two rak'at are then prayed in congregation
- Arrive early if possible — it is Sunnah to arrive before the imam
- The adhan is called, then the iqamah (internal call to begin) signals the prayer starts
During Congregational Prayer
Stand in straight rows, shoulder to shoulder and foot to foot. Follow the imam's movements — if you don't know all the words yet, move with the congregation and say what you know. Allah accepts your sincere effort.
Introduce Yourself
Tell someone you are a new Muslim. You will almost certainly receive a warm welcome, contact information, and invitations. The Muslim community loves welcoming new members. Don't be shy.
