Basic Halal and Haram
Halal means permitted. Haram means forbidden. These are not arbitrary rules — they reflect divine wisdom, health, and ethics. Here is a practical introduction for new Muslims.
Food — What is Halal?
- All fruits and vegetables
- Eggs and dairy
- All seafood (fish, prawns, etc.) — halal by default according to the majority position
- Meat that is dhabiha — slaughtered by a Muslim (or Jewish — some scholars permit Kosher) in the name of Allah
- Packaged foods free of haram ingredients
Food — What is Haram?
- Pork — in all its forms (bacon, lard, gelatin from pork, etc.)
- Alcohol — including in cooking (vanilla extract in alcohol base, food-grade alcohol)
- Blood
- Meat not slaughtered in Allah's name — or slaughtered while dead already
- Carnivorous animals — with fangs (lions, dogs, etc.)
- Meat consecrated to idols
"He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah."
Practical Tips in a Non-Muslim Country
- Look for a halal butcher or halal-certified supermarket options
- At restaurants: seafood and vegetarian options are usually safe; ask about cooking oils and ingredients
- Read ingredient labels: watch for "gelatin" (often pork), "lard," "wine," and "E-numbers" derived from animals
- When in genuine doubt and nothing else is available: the rule of necessity (darura) applies — you may eat what is available to survive
Alcohol and Intoxicants
All intoxicants are haram — not just wine and beer, but spirits, recreational drugs, and anything that clouds the mind. This includes in food and cooking. A small number of scholars permit trace alcohol in food manufacturing (e.g., fermented vinegar); the majority advise avoiding where possible.
Beyond Food — General Haram
The key prohibitions in daily life include:
- Lying, cheating, and deception
- Backbiting and slander (gheeba and buhtaan)
- Fornication and adultery (zina)
- Usury and interest (riba) — more complex; seek guidance when dealing with mortgages/banking
- Gambling
- Arrogance and oppression
Don't be overwhelmed. Work on one area at a time, with sincerity and patience.
