What Not to Panic About
Every new Muslim has a list of things they are worried about. Most of these worries are completely normal — and most of them are smaller than they seem. Here is an honest, reassuring look at the most common ones.
"I Don't Speak Arabic"
You do not need to know Arabic to be a valid, practising Muslim. You will learn certain phrases and the words of prayer gradually. Billions of Muslims around the world are not native Arabic speakers and practise Islam perfectly well. Use translations of the Qur'an freely — understanding the meaning is the goal.
"My Prayer Isn't Perfect Yet"
Neither was anyone's when they started. The Prophet ﷺ told a companion whose prayer was imperfect: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." But he said it with gentleness and gave instructions. Pray as best you can now and improve. A valid imperfect prayer is infinitely better than no prayer.
"I Keep Making Mistakes and Sinning"
This is part of being human. Allah created us knowing our weaknesses.
"Religion is ease. And whoever makes the religion too difficult for himself will be overpowered, so direct your affairs with moderation, approximate the ideal, receive the glad tidings that you will be aided, and seek help through the prayers of morning, evening, and part of the night."
"Other Muslims Are Judging Me"
Some will, unfortunately. Remember: the ummah is 1.8 billion people — like any large family, it contains wisdom and ignorance, kindness and impatience. Do not judge Islam by the behaviour of some Muslims. Focus on your relationship with Allah. Find a supportive community and avoid toxic online spaces.
"I'm Not Sure About Everything"
Faith is a journey, not a switch. Questions, doubts, and uncertainty are part of the process for almost everyone. Ask scholars, read, and reflect. Uncertainty is not the same as unbelief. Continue practising while you learn and your certainty will grow with time and experience.
"My Family Doesn't Accept It"
This is one of the hardest challenges and has its own lesson (Lesson 11). Know that many thousands of Muslims before you have walked this path and come through it. Your character and patience are the most powerful dawah to your family.
"I Can't Give Up [Specific Habit] Yet"
Work on what you can. Islam was not revealed in one day. The Companions gave up alcohol gradually. Make sincere du'a to Allah to help you, and He will make it easier.
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear."
